A FOOTBALL MATCH
Introduction:
Football is a very popular game all over the world. Perhaps, it is the most popular of all games. In towns and Cities-even in most interior villages, young men and boys play this game in open fields. Not only the players but even the spectators enjoy this game very much. We need not go traveling around the world to see how popular football is. One who has been to a final match of the Bordoloi Trophy tournament played at the Nehru Stadium in Guwahati knows it only too well.
The Venue and The Teams:
I have witnessed a lot of exciting football matches. I have a vivid memory of one of them because it was packed with high. drama. It was the final match of the Bordoloi Trophy tournament a couple of years ago. The match was played between the East Bengal Club of Calcutta and the Port Authority of Bangkok. Both the teams fielded their best talents on that day so that they could live up to their best reputations. A keen contest was expected because both the teams were equally strong. The galleries all around were packed to capacity and the bands provided the fitting music for an exciting occasion.
Description of The Football Match:
The referees arrived on time, followed by the two captains, S. Sengupta of the East Bengal Club and Niwatane of the Port Authority. The coin was tossed and the positions of the teams were chosen. Soon the other players came running into the field from two different directions filling the air with thunderous applause from the galleries. The two teams were introduced to the chief guest. The two teams took their respective places, and the match started on time with the referee’s whistle. The excitement started right from the word ‘go’, for within a minute the extremely fast. Thai right winger made a tremendous individual attempt and nearly scored. Throughout the first half, the ball kept on swinging from one end to the other with brilliant passings and dribblings. The spectators cheered every good move and every thrilling moment. However, neither of the two sides succeeded in scoring during the first half.
The Dramatic Second Half:
The real drama was staged in the second half. The captain of the Port Authority team accepted a beautiful pass from one of his team-mates and scored within five minutes of the second half with a terrific diagonal shot. From the tremendous applause from the galleries, it was quite clear that the majority of the spectators were supporters of the Thai team. In the next fifteen minutes, the East Bengal Club mustered the best skills but failed to equalize. Suddenly, the referee blew a few short whistles and ran towards a certain spot in the field. A Bangkok player was down on the ground, being kicked by an opponent. This was followed by some more duels. Soon the football match turned into a wrestling, boxing, and kicking match. It took nearly fifteen minutes to restore order in the field. Some patches of good football were seen in the dying minutes, but the atmosphere remained bitter till the end.
Conclusion:
Thus the match ended on that day, the Port Authority team lifting the coveted trophy. If the ugly incidents in the second half had not marred the spirit of the game, it would have been a glorious match. Such incidents, however, do take place occasionally in spite of rules against offenders. But let us hope that they do not become a part of the game.
