Introduction:
The Saraswati Puja is the festival of puja or worship of Saraswati, the Hindu goddess of learning and wisdom. Therefore, this festival is mainly celebrated by the students. The enthusiasm of the students on this day has no limit. Schools and colleges are agog with a merry and festive spirit. As such, though it is a festival of the Hindus, students of other communities also take part in the nonreligious part of it.
Description of the Goddess Saraswati:
Saraswati is supposed to be the sister of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. As she is the goddess of learning, she is dressed in complete white which is the symbol of purity. Her vehicle, too, is a white swan. Her musical instrument is the lyre (Veena). So she is known also as Veenapani (She who has a Veena in her hand). Another of her names is Baakdevi because she is also the goddess or Devi of the power of speech, (Baak Shakti).
The Saraswati Puja:
The Saraswati Puja practically begins on the evening of the day before the actual Puja, when students devoutly bring images for her from the image-makers and install them on altars. The next morning, they bathe early, dress in clean dress, and pray to the goddess. They do not take any food till the end of the ritual prayers, and worship performed by a priest. After these ceremonies are over, they take her Anjali and Prasad. Then they all eat together with merriment and joy.
General Merriment:
As the priests perform the religious rites before the goddess, boys and girls go out in groups and move from pandal to pandal. During this time, it is very pleasing to see tiny girls dressed in Mekhela Chadars and sarees. Those unable to manage and walk with the dresses of their mothers or grown-up sisters, present a very funny and endearing sight.
Cultural Aspect of Saraswati Puja:
In the evening, the students receive and entertain guests and present cultural functions. Beautiful and impressive gates and welcome arches, intelligently constructed add to the charm, pleasure, and enjoyment of the festival. However, loud-speakers, mostly blaring out Hindi film songs throughout the day, have presently become a very vulgar and disturbing factor. Students should do away with this horrible menace immediately.
Immersion:
The Saraswati Puja comes to an end in the afternoon, following the day of Puja. In this afternoon, the students of different institutions or clubs immerse the idols of the goddess in rivers and come back home with a heavy heart. Some do not immerse the idols but keep them in a corner.
Conclusion:
Though the Saraswati Puja ceremony will always remain popular with the students, they should keep in mind that the real puja of the goddess of learning is to devote their attention seriously to their studies.
