Introduction:

Muharram is the name of an Islamic month and a festival. The members of the Shia sect, in particular, observe this festival. Muharram is treated as the first month in the Arabic calendar, and, according to Islamic belief, God created the world in the month of Muharram.

Origin of Muharram:

Muharram originated in the tragic story of Hassan and Hussain, who were the two, sons of Fatima, the daughter of Muhammad the prophet. Hassan became Caliph (the Origin of religious head ) after the death of his father, Mohuream Hazrat Ali. But Muawiyah, the founder of the Ommiad dynasty, opposed Hassan and forcibly took over as Caliph of Damascus from Hassan. Hassan retired to Medina where his enemy Yazid, the son of Muawiyah, killed him with poison. Hussain then claimed the Caliphate which led to his confrontation with Yazid. The former collected an army to fight the enemy, but he was forced to keep confined at a place called Karbala for ten days without food and drink. Hussain was killed on the tenth day of Muharram along with his men. This confrontation divided Muslims into two sects, Shias and Sunnis.

The Muharram Festivals:

Shia Muslims all over the world observe Mohurram as a festival to commemorate the tragic deaths of Fiassan and Hussain. The festival begins on the first day of the new moon in the month of Muharram, culminating on the tenth. During those ten days, Shias fast and grieve for Hassan and Hussain. On the tenth day, a Tazia is built to symbolize the tomb over Hussain’s grave. It is then taken out in a procession and carried from place to place. The processionists mourn for Hassan and Hussain all along the journey and they also stage mock fights with swords and rods. The Tazia is then thrown into the water. The fast is broken on the same day, i.e. the tenth day, alms are given to the poor, and sweets are distributed.

The Muharram festival reminds us of the supreme sacrifice of Hussain fora good cause. Hussain and his men Conclusion preferred death to dishonor. They were deeply dedicated to their -religious cause and ever surrendered to the whims of a usurper. Theis sacrifice remains a source of religious inspiration for many Muslims to this day.
